Répertoires et sociabilités de l’exil chez les musiciens klezmorim. Entre Europe orientale et États-Unis, années 1880-1920

Résumé

L’article contribue à une histoire culturelle transatlantique des klezmorim, ces musiciens juifs itinérants originaires d’Europe de l’Est et immigrés aux États-Unis entre la fin du xix^e siècle et le premier quart du xx^e siècle. S’attachant à l’étude de ces expériences d’exils américains, il analyse certains aspects du processus d’intégration de ces musiciens aux organisations professionnelles américaines, dans le cadre d’une économie du divertissement en plein essor (spectacle vivant, industrie discographique, radiophonie et cinéma). Loin de se limiter à de simples phénomènes d’acculturation ou d’américanisation, l’intégration de ces musiciens aux sociabilités américaines redéfinit leur rapport à une Europe perdue.

Abstract

Repertoires and Forms of Sociability of Exile Among Klezmorim Musicians, Between Eastern Europe and the United States (1880s–1920s)

This paper is a contribution to the transatlantic cultural history of the Klezmorim — i.e., itinerant Jewish musicians from Eastern Europe who immigrated to the United States between the end of the nineteenth century and the first quarter of the twentieth century. By focusing on these experiences of American exile, the article analyzes specific aspects of the process of integration of these musicians into the professional organizations of the USA, amid a booming entertainment economy (performing arts, the recording industry, radio, and cinema). Far from being limited to mere phenomena of acculturation or Americanization, the integration of these musicians into America’s social fabric redefines their relationship to a lost Europe.

Les chefs d’orchestre d’Europe centrale en exil aux États-Unis. D’une guerre mondiale à l’autre

Résumé

Le paysage musical des États-Unis est marqué par la présence de célèbres chefs d’orchestre originaires d’Europe centrale qui ont dirigé les prestigieux orchestres des métropoles culturelles et conduit des orchestres de province à un niveau remarquable. Leur parcours migratoire et la construction de leur image sont retracés dans cette contribution, qui s’intéresse aussi à l’originalité de leur répertoire et à leur engagement politique et social.

Abstract

Central European Conductors in Exile in the United States, from One World War to the Next

The musical landscape of the United States is marked by the presence of famous conductors of Central European origin who have directed the prestigious orchestras of cultural metropolises and helped elevate provincial orchestras to remarkable levels. Their migration and the construction of their image are traced in this contribution, which also looks at the originality of their repertoires and at their political and social commitment.

Exils linguistiques, linguistiques de l’exil : itinéraires intellectuels et littéraires des linguistes chinois de la Guerre sino-japonaise (1937-1945) aux débuts de la Guerre froide

Résumé

Cet article envisage la question des circulations culturelles sous l’angle de la langue, prise à la fois comme objet d’étude scientifique, comme outil de création artistique et comme projet militant à partir des itinéraires intellectuels et littéraires d’une génération de linguistes chinois ayant pris les chemins de l’exil au tournant de la seconde guerre sino-japonaise et des débuts de la Guerre froide. Ce faisant, il esquisse un double moment de convergence et de divergence : à l’Université associée du Sud-Ouest à Kunming d’abord ; vers Taïwan, les États-Unis, la Malaisie, Singapour et Hong Kong ensuite.

Abstract

Linguistic Exiles, Linguistics in Exile: Intellectual and Literary Trajectories of Chinese Linguists in the First Half of the Twentieth Century

This article seeks to shed light on cultural circulations through the prism of language, understood simultaneously as a scientific object, a creative instrument, and a militant project, in the intellectual and literary trajectories of a generation of Chinese linguists who went into exile during the Second Sino-Japanese War or the Early Cold War period. This illuminates a double moment of convergence and divergence: at the National Southwestern Associated University first; towards Taiwan, the United States, Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong second.

Interactions politico-culturelles en temps de Guerre froide

Résumé

L’article retrace en grandes lignes l’histoire de l’Institut Littéraire Kultura fondé par d’anciens combattants polonais réfugiés à Rome et installés en France en 1947. Leur revue Kultura (1947-2000) et leurs nombreuses publications témoignent d’une double passion, politique et culturelle. Fondamentalement hostiles au totalitarisme soviétique, ils soutiennent, jusque dans les dernières décennies du xx^e siècle, les exilés et les mouvements de dissidence en Pologne et dans les pays de l’Est.

Abstract

The “Kultura Phenomenon”: Political and Cultural Interactions During the Cold War

The article outlines the history of the Kultura Literary Institute, founded by Polish war veterans who took refuge in Rome and settled in France in 1947. Their magazine Kultura (1947–2000) and their numerous publications illustrate their passion for both politics and culture. They were fundamentally hostile to Soviet totalitarianism and, until the final decades of the twentieth century, supported exiles and dissident movements in Poland and in Eastern countries.

Trois vagues d’émigrés russes : héritages et conflits

Résumé

À travers un bref panorama de la culture russe émigrée du XXe siècle, l’article propose une analyse des relations entre la diaspora et la métropole soviétique d’une part, entre les différentes vagues d’émigrés (surtout la première et la troisième) d’autre part ; on se penchera également sur la réception, principalement française, de la culture russe de l’exil et sur le « retour » de cette culture au sein de l’histoire culturelle officielle dans la Russie actuelle.

Abstract

Three Waves of Russian Emigrants: Legacies and Conflicts

Through a brief overview of Russian émigré culture in the twentieth century, the article proposes an analysis of relations between the diaspora and the Soviet metropolis on the one hand, and between the different waves of émigrés (especially the first and third) on the other. It will also look at the reception — mainly French — of Russian culture in exile and at the « return » of this culture to the official cultural history of Russia today.

L’exil et l’internationalisation d’un fait socio-musical total grec

Résumé

Cet article examine l’œuvre et les stratégies de Theodorakis pendant son exil en France lors de la dictature des Colonels (1967-1974). À travers des articles de presse, des archives publiques, des interviews et écrits du compositeur, l’analyse se concentre sur la mise en avant par Theodorakis de l’interpénétration entre révolution culturelle et révolution démocratique, sur ses multiples collaborations, sur la réception de son œuvre, sur l’internationalisation d’une cause locale par la musique.

Mikis Theodorakis, Exile, and the Internationalization of a Greek Socio-Musical Fact

This article examines the work and strategies of Theodorakis while in exile in France during the Colonels Junta (1967–1974). Through press articles, public archives, interviews with the composer, and his writings, the analysis focuses on Theodorakis’s emphasis on the interpenetration between a cultural and a democratic revolution, his multiple collaborations, on the reception of his work, and the internationalization of a local cause through music.

Une internationalisation contrariée. Écrivains algériens exilés en France pendant la décennie noire

Résumé

Exil des personnes, internationalisation des biens culturels et reconnaissance internationale ne s’articulent pas de manière linéaire mais dialectique, comme le montre le cas des écrivains algériens exilés en France pendant la guerre civile des années 1990. Si, malgré leur visibilité politique et médiatique, ils n’ont pas accédé à une reconnaissance littéraire durable en France, ils ont cependant ouvert la voie à celle d’autres écrivains algériens moins associés à cette crise politique.

Abstract

A Thwarted Internationalization: Algerian Writers Exiled in France During the Black Decade

Exile, the internationalization of cultural goods, and international recognition are articulated in a dialectical, and not a linear, way, as demonstrated by the case of Algerian writers exiled in France during the civil war of the 1990s. Despite their visibility in the media, they did not achieve lasting literary recognition in France; but they paved the way for greater recognition of other Algerian writers less associated with this political crisis.

Beyrouth, capitale révolutionnaire. Les nouvelles gauches arabes, années 1960-1970

Résumé

Capitale révolutionnaire, Beyrouth représente un site privilégié pour étudier les tensions entre logique de guerre et solidarité et brosser un tableau des nouvelles gauches arabes en prêtant attention aux groupes méconnus. L’analyse se concentre sur trois sites d’observation de ces tensions : l’hebdomadaire Al-Hurriyya comme agent des luttes égyptiennes et libanaises ; les circulations révolutionnaires dans la capitale libanaise ; la reconfiguration des géographies de résistance dans les conceptions révolutionnaires de Liban Socialiste (LS) et du Groupe Communiste Révolutionnaire (GCR). Cette étude contribue de la sorte à la réflexion sur l’échec des nouvelles gauches aussi bien que sur leurs expériences inachevées et leur héritage.

Abstract

Beirut, a Revolutionary Capital: The Arab New Left, between Solidarity and a Logic of War (1961–1979)

As a revolutionary node, Beirut offers a special opportunity to study the interplay between the logic of war and solidarity, and to paint a portrait of the Arab New Left, drawing special attention to groups that are not widely known. The tripartite analysis focuses on the weekly periodical Al-Hurriyya’s role in Lebanese and Egyptian militant actions, on revolutionary circulations in Beirut, and on the reconfiguration of the geographies of resistance in the conception of revolution by Socialist Lebanon. In doing so, the paper also aims to reassess the verdict of the defeat of the Left by shedding new light on its unfinished experiments and its legacy.
